Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley Trek begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola, where the walking starts along the Budhi Gandaki River. After a few days, you will enter Tsum Valley and spend several days among its villages and monasteries.

You then rejoin the main Manaslu Circuit and climb steadily to the trek's high point — the Larkya La Pass at 5,106 m. From the pass, the trail descends into the Annapurna region before a drive back to Kathmandu.

Because this is a restricted area, you trek with a licensed guide and the required permits which we will arrange for you. The route is remote and quiet, far from the crowds of Everest and Annapurna, making it a great choice for trekkers who want real adventure and deep culture in one journey.

Two Treks in One Journey

The Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley combine two different Himalayan experiences into one incredible trek. The Manaslu Circuit trek offers stunning mountain views and crossing the Larkya La Pass, whereas the Tsum Valley trek offers rich culture and ancient monasteries that still feel untouched by time.

The Manaslu Circuit

In the Manaslu Circuit, you will experience a wide variety of landscapes within a short period of time. The trek begins in the warm, green river valleys, winds through farming villages and pine forests, and ends among glaciers and bare rock at the Larkya La Pass (5,106m). It is the journey that loops around Mount Manaslu (8,163m), the eighth-highest mountain in the world.

The Tsum Valley

Tsum Valley is the cultural part of the trek; it lies near the Tibetan border. Tsum Valley was closed to foreigners until 2008, so it is a restricted area of Nepal. Here you will experience the culture and traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. You visit ancient monasteries like Rachen Gompa, Mu Gompa, and the Milarepa Piren Phu Cave.

Why should you choose the Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek? A Journey That Will Change You

Imagine this: One week, you are spending the day in a quiet mountain valley, the next you are standing on one of the longest passes in the Himalayas, Larkya La Pass (5,106m). That’s the Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley Trek – two very different treks in one journey.

Two trips in one. You get the quiet, Tsum Valley, and the high mountains of the Manaslu Circuit on a single trek. One half is about culture and people; the other is about peaks and passes. Few treks in Nepal offer both.

Fewer crowds, more peace. This is a restricted area, so only a smaller number of trekkers trek in the Manaslu Region. That means quiet trails and a real sense of adventure — far from the busy paths of Everest and Annapurna.

A Cultural experience. In Tsum Valley, you stay in teahouses, meet the local Tsumba people, and visit old monasteries. It's not just a walk past the views — you spend real time inside a living Tibetan Buddhist world.

The Larkya La Pass. Crossing the Larkya La Pass (5,106 m) is the highlight of the trek — a tough but rewarding day with wide mountain views you'll remember for years.

Everything is taken care of. We handle all five permits, your licensed guide, and the safety planning. Your only job is to walk and enjoy the journey.

You drive along the Kathmandu-Pokhara Highway for the first part of the day; after Malekhu, you turn towards the hill bazaar of Dhading Bensi. After Salyantar, the road is bumpy and dusty, but the beautiful scenery and villages will make your day memorable. You will reach your destination, Machha Khola, late in the afternoon. There is a small market with a few shops, lodges, and donkeys that are kept there. Stay your first night in the mountains in Machha Khola.

Trek from Machha Khola to Jagat

You cross the Machha Khola [Fish Stream] and head upstream to the tiny village of Khorla Bensi and the hot springs at Tatopani. The valley sides are steep until they are impassable, and the route then switches to the left bank by way of a suspension bridge. The trail is quite exposed and challenging in places.

After a short section of forest path, you reach the single teahouse at Doban. Above Doban, the Budi Gandaki descends on an impressive series of rapids. Beyond this steep section, the river is much more placid, meandering across a broad gravel bed. At Lauri, you cross the river on a suspension bridge, and then climb on a high path to the fields of Jagat, where you stop for another night at mountain.

Essential Information

Permits required for the Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley Trek

The Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek is a restricted region, so to enter, you need special permits. When you book your trek with us, we will handle all the paperwork for you.

Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (MRAP): This permit is required to enter the restricted Manaslu region. The cost depends on the season and how many days you will stay in the restricted zone:

  • Autumn (September–November): USD 100 per person for the first 7 days, then USD 15 per additional day
  • All other seasons (December–August): USD 75 per person for the first 7 days, then USD 10 per additional day

Tsum Valley Restricted Area Permit: A separate restricted-area permit is required for the Tsum Valley. The permit varies from season to season:

  • Autumn (September–November): USD 40 per person for the first 7 days, then USD 7 per additional day
  • All other seasons (December–August): USD 30 per person for the first 7 days, then USD 7 per additional day

Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP): The Manaslu Conservation Area Permit is required for entering the Manaslu Conservation Area protected zone. Fixed cost year-round: NPR 3,000 (approx. USD 22) per person.

Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP: The Annapurna Conservation Area Permit is required as the trail exits the Manaslu region near Dharapani and enters the Annapurna Conservation Area. Fixed cost: NPR 3,000 (approx. USD 22) per person.

Chumnubri Rural Municipality Permit: The Chumnubri Rural Municipality Permit is a local government permit issued by the Chumnubri Rural Municipality. The collected fee is used for local trail maintenance, suspension bridge repairs, and check post staffing of most of the upper Manaslu villages – including Lho, Sama Gaun, and Samdo. Cost: NPR 1,000 per person (approx. USD 8)

All five permits are included in the Higher Limits Trek package and arranged entirely by our team. You have to provide a passport scan, Nepal visa copy, and travel insurance details — we handle everything with the Department of Immigration. You can check our complete guide to the  Manaslu region permits.

What has changed in 2026: Solo Trekkers?

There is an important update for 2026 in the registered region. On March 22, 2026, the Department of Immigration now allows solo trekkers in the Manaslu Region. They can apply for the permits without needing to pair with a second person.

But one key rule has not changed: a licensed guide is still required. The 2026 update allows solo permit applications — it does not allow guideless or fully independent trekking. Every trekker in the Manaslu region must still walk with a licensed guide, and this is checked at checkpoints along the route. Your guide is included in your package, so you're fully covered either way. For more information, you can check the Restricted Area Permit Update 2026.

If you would like to study Nepal's trekking permit system in more detail, including TIMS cards, conservation area permits, and restricted area rules, then you can check our full guide on Trekking Permits in Nepal.

Where are permits checked?

Your guide presents the permits at checkpoints along the trail — Jagat (where the Manaslu RAP, MCAP, and Chumnubri fees are registered), the Tsum Valley entry at Lokpa/Chumling, then Philim, Namrung, and Sama Gaun. At Dharapani, your Manaslu permit is closed out, and your ACAP is checked as you enter the Annapurna area. Your guide handles all of this, but carry printed copies of your permits, as digital versions aren't always accepted.

Best Time for the Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley Trek

The best time for the Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek is spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), which offer clear skies, mountain views, and stable weather. Here is a season-by-season breakdown to help you choose.

Manaslu Tsum Valley in Spring (March-May)

Best for: Rhododendron blooms, warm days, and green forests

Spring is one of the best seasons for trekking in the Manaslu region. The lower trails between Jagat and Deng along the Budhi Gandaki burst into color with blooming rhododendron forests, while the high mountains are clear and sharp. The weather is stable.

Highlights

  • Rhododendron and wildflower blooms along the trails
  • Pleasant daytime temperatures
  • Clear mountain views, especially in early spring
  • Longer daylight hours for full trekking days

Things to Consider

  • Some haze possible in late May
  • Warmer and busier in the lower routes

Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek in Autumn (September to November)

Best For: Clear skies, sharp mountain views, stable weather

Autumn is the most popular season for trekking in any region. The views of Mt. Manaslu and the peaks around the Larkya La Pass are clearest as the monsoon rain has cleared the air. The dry weather makes this the safest time to cross the Larkya La Pass (5,106m).

Highlights:

  • The clearest mountain views of the year
  • Dry, stable weather for the high pass
  • Comfortable daytime temperatures
  • Lively trails and festivals (Dashain and Tihar), the biggest festival of Nepal

Things to Consider:

  • The busiest season – book early
  • Cold nights at higher altitudes

Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek in Winter (December to February)

Best For: Not Recommended

In winter, the trails are cold and foggy. The Larkya La Pass can be blocked by snow, and some teahouses may be closed. This season will be the best for the lower Manaslu elevation trek.

Highlight:

  • Very few other trekkers
  • Best for lower elevation
  • Peaceful Tsum Valley villages

Things to Consider:

  • Heavy cold and snow at high altitude

Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek in Monsoon (June to August)

Best For: Not Recommended

In the monsoon, the trails are risky and slippery. The Budhi Gandaki valley is prone to landslides, and leeches are common in the lower forests. Clouds often hide mountain views.

Highlights:

  • Lush, green scenery
  • Almost empty trails

Things to Consider:

  • High landslide risk in the valley
  • Slippery trails and leeches
  • Cloudy skies often block the views

Which Season Should You Choose?

For most trekkers, autumn (September–November) is the most suitable time for the Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley Trek — the weather is stable, the skies are clear, and it is the safest time to cross the Larkya La Pass (5,106 m). Spring (March–May) is a perfect choice if you want to see blooming rhododendron forests and slightly warmer days.

Winter and monsoon are not recommended for the Tsum Valley with Manaslu Trek. Whichever season you choose, booking early helps — especially in autumn, when the trails are busiest. If you're not sure which dates suit you, our team is happy to help you plan around the best weather for your trip.

Food on the Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley Trek

On the Manaslu Tsum Valley trek, you will get three meals a day – breakfast, lunch, and dinner, which are included in your package. The food provided during the trek is simple, freshly cooked, and will give you the energy you need for long days on the trail. Meals are served in the teahouses where you stay, or at lodges along the route during lunch.

You will be served Nepali, Tibetan, and a few Western dishes. The most common meal is dal bhat — rice, lentil soup, vegetables, and pickles — which locals eat twice a day. It's filling, healthy, and refillable, so it's the best fuel for trekking.

Common food on the trek:

  • Dal bhat — rice, lentils, vegetables, and pickle (the trekker's favorite)
  • Noodles and pasta — fried noodles, thukpa (noodle soup), or simple pasta
  • Tibetan bread, chapati, and eggs — common for breakfast
  • Potatoes — boiled, fried, or as soup, grown locally
  • Momos — Tibetan dumplings, found in lower villages
  • Soups — vegetable, garlic, or noodle soup (garlic soup helps with altitude)
  • Hot drinks — tea, coffee, hot lemon, and hot chocolate

If you have any food allergies or special needs, just let your guide know; they'll help arrange suitable meals where possible.
