Island Peak Climbing via Gokyo Chola Pass EBC Trek is one of the challenging adventure trip in Khumbu Himalayan Regions. Island Peak (6187 meters), also locally known as Imja Tse, lies to the south of Mount Everest and is one of the most popular trekking peaks of Nepal. After exploring the temples, shrines, bazaars and restaurants of Kathmandu we take an exciting mountain flight to Lukla 2840m and trek up the Dudh Kosi Valley, surrounded by the soaring peaks of Thamserku and Kusum Kanguru. It’s a steep ascent to Namche Bazaar, capital of the Kumbu Sherpa’s, where we are again greeted by spectacular mountain vistas.

Trip Highlights:

  • Explore Gokyo Valley and climb Gokyo Ri for stunning 8000-meter peak views.
  • Cross the high Cho La Pass and reach Everest Base Camp & Kala Patthar.
  • Traverse Kongma La Pass toward Island Peak.
  • Summit Island Peak for thrilling alpine climbing and panoramic scenery.
  • Trek through Sherpa villages, turquoise lakes, and glacier landscapes.
  • Fully supported by experienced Sherpa guides for a safe adventure.
A rest day here aids acclimatization and there are great optional walks to enjoy the area. We then trek into Gokyo Valley and ascend slowly, to ensure proper acclimatization, walking beside the moraines of Ngozumpa Glacier and turquoise lakes to reach Gokyo. From here we can climb Gokyo Ri to view of all of the region’s 8000-meters peaks including Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu – a breathtaking panorama. Our trek then heads via Cho La Pass (5300 meters) to Lobuche, where we follow Khumbu Glacier to Gorak Shep. From here we ascend Kala Patar (5555 meters) where we experience another breathtaking panorama of Everest and its surrounding peaks. We also visit the historical site of Everest Base Camp. Now well acclimatized for heading Island Peak, we cross Kongma La (5535meters) to Chukkung, to make our challenge on Island Peak. Though technically harder than Mera Peak, this expedition is also well within the reach of anyone looking for their first Himalayan summit.

If you wish to make your trip shorter to Island Peak then our 23 Days Everest Base Camp and Island Peak or only 18 days Island Peak Climbing Adventure is option for you.

After summiting amazing Island Peak, we return at our relaxed pace back to Namche and Lukla for our return flight to Kathmandu.

17Day

Rest and Acclimatization day.

18-19Day

Summit to Island Peak and return to Chhukung

From a camp on the left-hand ridge we scramble across the broad open gully and gain the right-hand ridge. Following through, this gives easy scrambling to the snow-covered glacier above. A route needs to be found out leftwards, avoiding seracs and crevasses before turning back northwards over snow covered scree in the margin between the glacier and the base of the main summit ridge. After crossing a gully with some stone and icefall danger, a steep snow and ice ramp leads upwards for nearly 100 meters (300ft), to the summit ridge. The last moves on to the ridge often prove difficult and many climbers leave fixed rope in place to aid descent. The ridge itself is a classic and undulates towards the main summit which is reached by a final tricky snow pitch. Standing atop we have the stunning close-up view of the South face of Lhotse (8,501 m.) in vastness that looms before us. We have the impressive dramatic views of the mountains -Amadablam (6,856 m.), Chamlang and Baruntse in the far horizon. Descent is made by the same route to the lower base camp.

After viewing the summit and snapping pictures, you start descending back to High Camp. From there, you descend further down to Island Peak Base Camp. After a short break and packing, you trek back to Chukkung, which is reached by afternoon. This long day but rewarding one is considered the climax of the Island Peak climbing journey.

Essential Information

Meals/Foods:

Every day’s breakfast, lunch & dinner is included in the package during the trekking and climbing. This will be a dish of Nepali, Indian or Continental source cooked by the lodgings you stay at and will be cooked by our professional cook during the camping.

Acclimatization:

Keep in mind that you will be passing above 5000m/16400ft and reaching at 6187m during the journey to the top of the Island Peak. Walking fast at such elevation could lead to medical complications (Acute Mountain Sickness) which could be serious. There is less oxygen compared to sea level in high-altitudes places. The higher, altitude will be the less oxygen in air. Your body needs a days to acclimatize to this environment, which is why we will stop a day rest in Namche Bazzar and in Island Peak Base Camp. Although we provide information regarding AMS insurance, the only option for treatment is descending (evacuation). We advise that clients with known heart, lung or blood diseases, or clients over the age of 60 to discuss with their doctor before traveling with us.

Symptoms of AMS include mild to severe headaches, dizziness, fever, loss of appetite or stomach pain; it is important to alert our staff if you are feeling poorly to ensure that illness does not progress.

Health and Experience Required:

The Island Peak Climbing involves five to seven hours walking per day and Ice climbing during the climb. However, it is some part of this trip at very high altitude, which will take a physical toll. There are no special physical or training requirements, but if you have high altitude experience & trekking is a benefit.
