Essential Information

Best Time for Upper Mustang Jeep Tour

The Upper Mustang Jeep Tour can be done throughout the year, but the best time is from March to November, with spring (March to May), monsoon (June to August), and autumn (September to November) all offering excellent travel conditions. Upper Mustang lies in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, meaning it receives very little rainfall even during the monsoon season.

Autumn (September to November)

Autumn is our preferred season for the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour. After the monsoon, the air is usually clearer, and the landscapes look fresh and sharp. The combination of dry cliffs, blue skies, mountain views, and comfortable daytime temperatures makes the journey especially enjoyable.

Spring (March to May)

Spring is a pleasant time to travel through Upper Mustang. The days are usually comfortable for sightseeing, and the mountain views are often clear. It is a good season to explore villages, monasteries, and viewpoints of Upper Mustang.

Winter (December to February)

Winter is a completely different experience. The region becomes very cold, especially at night, and snow or freezing conditions can affect road travel at higher elevations. We recommend winter trips mainly for travelers who are comfortable with cold conditions and a more flexible itinerary.

Monsoon (June to August)

Upper Mustang is one of the few Himalayan regions that can still be visited during the monsoon because it lies in the rain shadow of the Himalayas. However, we will still be updated on road conditions, particularly on the routes before reaching the rain-shadow area, as heavy rain can cause delays.

Our Recommendation

If you want the best overall experience, we recommend the spring and autumn seasons. If your schedule only allows a monsoon trip, Upper Mustang can still be a good option, but we recommend allowing some flexibility because road conditions can change.

Required Permits For the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour

Upper Mustang is a restricted area in Nepal, so foreign travelers need the required permits before traveling beyond Kagbeni. If you book with Higher Limits Trek, our team will arrange the necessary permits and paperwork before your tour begins.

Restricted Area Permit (RAP)

The Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit (RAP) is mandatory for foreign travelers entering Upper Mustang. The current fee is US$50 per person per day. The permit is processed through a registered Nepali trekking agency rather than being obtained independently by the traveler.

Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

Since Upper Mustang lies within the Annapurna Conservation Area, you will also need an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). The permit fee is NPR 3,000 per person for most foreign nationals.

Licensed Guide Requirement

A government-licensed guide is mandatory for visiting Upper Mustang. While the previous requirement to have a minimum of two trekkers has been removed, all visitors must still travel with a licensed guide, and the permits must be processed through a registered Nepali agency.

Please note: Permit fees and regulations may change. We check the latest requirements before your trip and arrange the permits according to your itinerary.

Accommodation During the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour

During the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour, you will stay in local tea houses along the route. Accommodation is simple but comfortable, with clean rooms and basic facilities suited to the remote mountain environment.

In Lo Manthang and larger settlements, you may find comfortable accommodation options, while smaller villages at high altitude offer simpler rooms. Most accommodations provide shared bathrooms, and facilities such as hot showers, Wi-Fi, and charging may be available at an additional cost.

How High Do You Sleep Each Night during the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour?

Meals During the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour

During the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour, you will enjoy freshly prepared meals at the teahouses. Food is simple, filling, and suitable for long days of travel. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a cup of tea or coffee, are provided during the tour and are usually served in the teahouse where you stay.

For breakfast, you can have porridge, Tibetan bread, pancakes, eggs, toast, muesli, Noodle soup, tea, and coffee. Lunch and dinner menus are quite similar; you can have Dal Bhat, fried rice, noodles, pasta, momo, soups, potatoes, and vegetable curries. Food choices become more limited at higher elevations.

Vegetarian meals are widely available, and vegan meals can usually be arranged with advance notice.

Please Note: Food choices become more limited as you travel deeper into Upper Mustang because of the region's remote location. We recommend informing us about any dietary restrictions or allergies before the tour begins.

Transportation During the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour

The Upper Mustang Jeep Tour is done by private 4WD jeep, which is well suited to the region's rugged and sometimes rough mountain roads. You will travel comfortably between the main villages while enjoying views of the valleys, cliffs, and surrounding mountains.

Our experienced local driver knows the Mustang route and adjusts the journey according to road and weather conditions. We also make regular stops along the way for photos, sightseeing, meals, and short walks.

For the remote sections of Upper Mustang, road conditions can change with weather, so travel time may vary depending on the condition of the route.
