At around 9:00 AM on Wednesday, the flood began with an unexpected rise in the Bhote Koshi River. According to reports from the area, the sudden surge came from the Tibetan side and moved quickly through the Bhote Koshi corridor. Timure and Syabrubesi are the seriously affected villages.
Rescue teams from the Nepali Army, Armed Police Force, and Nepal Police have been sent to the affected areas. Helicopters have also been used for search and rescue.
The exact cause of the sudden flood in Rasuwa is still being investigated. Early evaluation suggests that an ice avalanche may have blocked the Lhende River, causing water to build up and then suddenly flow downstream. Authorities are also looking into whether a glacial lake outburst may have played a role. However, the exact cause has not been officially confirmed yet. Syabrubesi has been directly affected by the flood and is currently the most essential area for Langtang trekkers to watch.
The Bhote Koshi flood damaged the Syabrubesi market and surrounding settlements, while hydropower projects, roads, and local infrastructure were also affected. Reports also show that the Chilime Hydropower Project was damaged, and the extent of the other damage is still being studied.
The impact of the flood is not limited to buildings. Bridges and roads along the Rasuwa corridor have been affected, creating major transportation problems. For trekkers, this matters because Syabrubesi is the gateway to most Langtang Region Treks. At this moment, the Langtang Region Treks are not possible due to damaged routes and the local communities dealing with the effects of the flood.
The main priority at this moment is not getting trekkers into the Langtang region, but allowing rescue and local assessments to continue safely. Trekkers planning to visit Langtang should wait for updated travel news before making their journey.
The route to Syabrubesi has also been affected by the current flash flood, making it difficult to reach the Langtang region for trekking.
The usual route is:
Kathmandu → Nuwakot → Dhunche → Syabrubesi → Langtang Valley
Roads are damaged, and bridges have been swept away by floods and river erosion along the route to Langtang. The authorities are still assessing the full damage caused by the flood; it has been reported that the Trishuli-Mailung-Syabrubesi route is impassable. Transportation from Kathmandu to Rasuwa or any district has been stopped for now.
For Langtang trekkers, this means the normal route to Syabrubesi is currently not safe or accessible for trekking. We recommend postponing your departure until further notice.

This does not necessarily mean that the entire Langtang trekking trail has been damaged. You can do other Langtang region treks where Syabrubesi is not in the itinerary.
The current Bhote Koshi flood is most directly affecting the Langtang region because Syabrubesi and the roads into Rasuwa have been seriously affected.
This does not mean that all trekking routes in Nepal are affected or closed. The Annapurna, Manaslu and Everest regions have different access routes, so their conditions should be checked separately.
For example, the current flood in Rasuwa does not automatically mean that the Annapurna Circuit Trek, Manaslu Circuit Trek or Everest Base Camp Trek is closed.
