Upper Mustang Permit-New Update 2026:

Since 1992, foreigners have been able to visit Upper Mustang but are heavily regulated by the government when doing so. In order to go into this area, you must obtain an Upper Mustang Permit through the proper channels before getting there- this makes Upper Mustang one of the most heavily registered areas of Nepal for trekking but also now has many visitors for adventure or cultural purposes who want to see what is unique about Upper Mustang and why it is so special.

The Upper Mustang region is distinguished by official "Mustang" signs at its northern border, located in the north of Kagbeni, where police and ACAP officers verify the permits of non-Nepalese travelers. The Agency on Control of the Administrative Processes (ACAP) also conducts checks at Gyu La Pass (east of Kagbeni) to ensure that all travelers comply with regulations.

2026 Upper Mustang Permit Updates

  • Cost: The fee is USD 50 per person per day, earlier permits cost USD 500 for 10 days, with minimum of 10 days.
  • Validity: The permits is valid for only the exact number of days you purchased.
  • Requirements: A licensed guide is required for all trekking groups.
  • Group Policy: The minimum number of trekkers required to apply for the permit is 2.
  • Permits must be applied for through a registered Nepalese trekking agency; permits cannot be obtained independently.
  • Additional Fees: You are still required to have an ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit) which costs approximately NPR 3,000 (approx. $30 US).
  • Extra Days: If your trek exceeds the permitted duration, an additional USD 50 per day will apply.

These 2026 updates make the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour and trekking permits more flexible and affordable for travelers planning short or customized trips. For more details check our  Upper Mustang Permit Blog
