First Earthquake:
A powerful earthquake of 7.9 magnitude hit Nepal in the afternoon of 25th April. The earthquake, which is one of the most powerful tremors to have taken place in perhaps a century, has caused an irreversible loss of lives and property. The intensity of the earthquake was felt across the country with huge impact registered in Kathmandu Valley. Many temples, courtyards and statues in Patan Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square and Kathmandu Durbar Square- all World Heritage monuments- have been reduced to ruins.
The symbolic Bhimsen Tower, Nepal’s tallest monument, also collapsed and so many residential and commercial buildings throughout the Kathmandu. A tourist hotel in Thamel also crumbled to the ground. Some tourists have suspected to have been killed in the incident. Tribhuvan International Airport, Nepal’s only international airport in Kathmandu, was close for few days. The number of human casualty is estimated to be well over 9000 though the figure is likely to rise and more than 300 peoples are still missing. Rescue teams assisted by local communities and security forces have been carrying out rescue operation to save lives and retrieve injured ones and dead bodies from rubble.
At this hour our heart goes out to all Nepali brothers and sisters and our deepest sympathy to the families who have lost their loved ones. We hope for the quick recovery of all who have been injured. This is undoubtedly one of the most tragic events to take place in the history of Nepal.
